April 22, 2020 marks the 50th year of #EarthDay. Representing the biggest challenge to the future of humanity and the life-support systems that make our world habitable, climate action is the theme of this year’s Earth Day. Enjoy these ten tips for ways you can support the environment on Earth Day and all year-round.
- Clean up your community.
Pick up trash in your neighborhood (while maintaining at least a six-foot distance, of course). - Switching off.
We are all spending a lot more time at home these days, so chances are, you are using more energy. On Earth Day, try to unplug! Turn off the air conditioning or central heating and open the windows, make sure you switch the lights off when you leave the room or keep the TV off for the day. - Reuse, reuse, reuse.
In the kitchen, make a point to only use reusable cups, plates and utensils. Make 2020 the year you stop using plastic forks and paper plates! - Plant a tree without leaving home.
Make a small donation to ‘buy a tree’ through Stand for Trees! Stand for Trees is a global organization that helps fight tropical deforestation and climate change. - Recycling starts with us.
Commit to these seven recycling promises to become a global recycling citizen. - Enjoy nature.
Exercise outside! With gyms closed, take the time to practice yoga outside or go for a walk or run! - Go virtual.
Attend a virtual Earth Day event through the official Earth Day non-profit’s website. - Include the kids.
With millions of kids out of school due to COVID-19, take the opportunity to involve them! Something as simple as having them help you sort recycling or practice shutting off the water while brushing their teeth. Everything helps! - Grow your own food.
While staying at home, it’s the perfect time to grow vegetables, fruit and herbs in or around your house. - Leave your car at home.
Consider using your bike as your new mode of transportation. Leaving your car at home causes less damage to the air quality.
